Female Conditions

The technical name for the field of Urology is Genitourinary (GU). The Urologist has traditionally provided health care for both the genital and urinary systems of males and the urinary system in females, with the Gynecologist caring for the genital system in females. Recently, the Urologist and Gynaecologist have expanded their roles in the field of Urogynecology

Women experience some of the same urologic diseases as do men, albeit with different incidence and prevalence

Cancers (adrenal, kidney, arterial, bladder, and urethral cancers)
Urinary Stones
Urinary Infections
Urinary Injuries
Voiding Dysfunction.

However, with the exception of Voiding Dysfunction, the evaluation and management of the above diseases are similar for both men and women. Voiding Dysfunction and Urogynaecology are major areas of Female Urology.

As a result of clinical and technological advances of the last 20 years, we are more knowledgeable and better equipped to diagnose and treat disorders of the lower urinary tract in females. This new subspecialty of female urology will continue to expand and reach new horizons in the 21st Century. A new area of research in female urology is sexual dysfunction.

Male urology, addresses conditions such as

Kidney stones
Bladder and urethral obstructions
Sexually transmitted diseases
Prostate gland disorders
Infertility and impotence
Erectile Dysfunction
Vasectomy and it's reversal

Kidney stones and bladder or ureteral obstructions pose serious problems and great pain for patients. Using fiberoptic techniques, urologists can diagnose and treat these blockages without making surgical incisions. Specialists are also highly skilled in the use of lithotripsy (shock waves which fragment hard-to-reach stones) and advanced techniques to access and eliminate difficult obstructions.

Urology now offers the most advanced treatment available for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, commonly called BPH or enlarged prostate. This condition usually occurs in men age 50 and over, and can cause painful bladder infections, frequent urination, and other problems. Treatment involves a wide range of therapies, including the latest surgical techniques.

Medical interventions to correct male erectile dysfunction have become highly sophisticated. Urologists provide a full range of testing and therapies, including hormonal treatment, penile injection therapy, penile prostheses and micro-vascular surgery to enhance blood flow.

Vasectomy reversal and other treatment for male infertility is available. Urologists and reproductive endocrinologists often work in conjunction to assess a couple’s needs, and take an aggressive approach to fertility problems.
